Knocks Girl From Seat and Continues Way Riding in Her Place-Accident Has Peculiar Features-All Ends Well.
A fatality was narrowly averted in a runaway last Friday in Libertyville which ended in a feature which would have been ludicrous had it not bordered so closely on the tragic. The team of Henry Elfering was standing in front of H. B. Eger’s hardware store when it suddenly started to run.
Mr. Elfering attemped to stop the animals but without success. They turned south and were in a moment tearing along at a terriffic gate. After they had gone about two blocks the frightened team overtook a young lady, a daughter of Robert Ellis, driving a light road wagon.
The horses blinded by fright collided with the rig. The girl was thrown from the seat and one of the maddened animals knocking out the contents landed full within the conveyance. The horse was unable to extracate itself and the Ellis horse joining the runaway proceeded south as far as the electric depot drawing the horse in the wagon while the other kept alongside firmly held by the harness. When the three horses were stopped the wagon had to be tipped over by man force in order to unload the animal. Strangely none of the horses were injured and practically no damage was done.
