Case where Black Cat “Rides the Bumpers’ Like An Oldtime “Weary Willie.”
There are many kinds of Vagrants but John Bain of the Northwestern railroad claims to have discovered a novelty in the way of bumper riders.
“While I was waiting for the 5:10 to pull out of the Northwestern terminal Monday night I noticed a good solid black kitten crawling around under the coaches but it was nothing very unusual so I put it from my mind.” said the conductor. When we pulled into Waukegan I got off the train and was standing on the platform when suddenly a black kitten crawled out from under the coach and I recognized it immediatly as the one I had seen in the Northwestern station in Chicago. The cat was very dusty but still well and hearty and now Waukegan has another feline. As far as I could make out,” he concluded, “it had been in under the spring of the coaches.”
This is, as one resident remarked “some cat story” but aside from questioning the veracity of the conductor, it is a wonder the 5:10 made the run without an accident when it carried a black cat under its coaches.
