Beggers on Horse Back.

Horses are so plentiful in Buenos Ayres, that beggers take their rounds and ask alms on horseback, without diminishing, in any degree, their claims to sympathy. These beggers do not extend their excursions, and thus call in question the old proverb, “set a begger a horseback,” Dew. P.

Wolves and Dogs.

Russia,-On the 5th of April, two women, walking at Riga, in a solitary part of the city, were torn to pieces by a pack of dogs which had no master. By an official account of the devastation committed by wolves, in the government of Livonia, in 1823, it appears that they devoured 1841 horses, 1243 foals, 1807 horned cattle, 733 calves, 15,182 sheep, 626 lambs, 2545 goats, 183 kids, 4190 swine, 312 sucking pigs, 703 dogs, and 673 geese.

Panther

A panther lately attacked a little girl, 12 or 13 years old, in Jackson city, Tennessee. The furious animal was first assailed by a small dog, which only diverted his attantion from the girl for a few moments, when another larger dog came up and made battle with him, during which two men arrived and rescued the gallant dog and killed the panther. It is very seldom that this animal attacks a human being.

Horse Sagacity and Firmness.

A Carman was driving along Beekman street a few days since, and suddenly his horse came to a dead stand-still without any apparent cause. He urged the animal to proceed, by blows as well as words, to no effect, and as he had always been kind and true before his obstinacy was inexplicable. The passengers on the street gathered round, the cart was pushed and the horse severely flogged, all to no purpose. A bystander who felt some sympathy for the animal, observed that a pump was near, and that the horse kept his eye upon it, observed that perhaps the poor fellow wanted the grog, and would not leave the tavern till he had it. A bucket was accordingly brought, the Corporation gin filled into it, and the famished beast drank off three bucket bumpers before his thirst was slacked. He immediately turned from the pump, and with his accustomed kindness went on with his load, with no other fault finding, than that which fell on the head of his improvident and cruel master. N. Y. Dogs

An affecting anecdote is related in the French papers;-A young man took a dog into a boat, rowed to the centre of the Seine, and threw the animal over, with the intent to drown him. The poor dog often tried to climb up the side of the boat, but his master as often pushed him back, till overbancing himself, he fell overboard. As soon as the faithful dog saw his master in the stream, he left the boat and held him above water, till help arrived from shore, and his life was saved!

A Fortunate Escape.

In the history of Russia mention is made of a peasant who in quest of honey leaped into a hollow tree, where he found such a great stock that he sunk up to the breast in it; He stuck fast, and his remedy appeared but to eat himself into liberty by devouring all the honey. Two days he remained in this situation, vainly crying out for help in the thick wood, where his voice could not be heard. At length a bear came to the tree on the same errand, & descended with his tail downward; the man cought hold of his loins, which surprising the bear, he pulled with all his might to get out again; the man kept his hold, and was drawn out of his sweet confinement, which otherwise would have been his grave.

Chicken and Tiger

A pretty little bantam was recently thrown into the cage of one of the tigers domiciled in the managerie of the Jardin des Plantes.  It was designed to sharpen his appetite for some blocks of meat which he had declined to eat.  Not in the least alarmed by his terrible roars, bantam advanced with the most unsuspecting confidence to peck the food that was lying untasted before him, and, when she had satisfied her hunger, began to examine closely the claws of the monster.  Far from being affronted with the new inmate of his cage, and when the keepers managed to take her away, he obstinately refused to taste and food, either living or dead, till she was put back again.

Giraffe Fights Lion

If a giraffe sees a lion first he can outdistance him and if driven to bay matches his hoofs against the teeth and claws of his enemy.

A Panther Fight — The Lively Times They Have Out in Oregon

Oregon is the scene of a panther-slaying episode, which, as related by the Butler Creek Enterprise, is enough to make Fiction blush over the audacity of Truth.  A settler living near Scott’s Mills set out to haul some cedar timber, being accompanied by children, a little rat-terrier, a Newfoundland dog, and a large-bore ritle.  After leaving the main road a panther crossed the path and was quickly treed by the dogs.  Obtaining a rest aim, he shot the beast dead.  When he returned to the wagon the children pointed out another panther behind them in the path by which they had come.  This one was treed and shot in the same manner, but sprang from the tree and ran a hundred yards before it fell.  Proceeding some distance further, the little dog treed a panther two-thirds grown.  No. 3 was shot dead.  Before he had time to reload he heard the big dog barking at something about 200 yards off.  On going there he saw the biggest panther he had ever seen — a very large female.  She was growling and snapping her teeth at the dogs.  It was difficult to get a good shot, but on firing she came down and ran off, the dogs following.  She was next found on a stirrup about twenty-five feet from the ground.  He shot again, but no vital part was struck.  On looking for a bullet, he found that he had only half a bullet left with which to make a successful shot or lose his game.  His patching was all gone as well, so he tore off part of the lining of his coat.  Taking careful aim, he fired.  The beast tumbled to the ground and was seized by the dogs.  She had succeeded in tearing the scalp nearly off the big dog when death put an end to the struggle.  No. 4 measured nine feet.
