Captain Hawkins

Captain Hawkins, of the Ever horpe, of Hull, while at the Davis’s Straits fishery, being engaged with a boat’s crew in attempting to kill a bear in the water, the enraged animal made a snatch at captain H. and seizing him by the thigh dragged him out of the boat, and immediately made off with his expected prey; but one of the crew throwing a mallet with all his strength, it fortunately hit the bear, and caused him to let go his hold on Captain H, whom the boat’s crew succeeded in recovering on board; after the imminent danger of being worried to death, knocked in the head, or drowned, all in the compass of a few minutes. Capt. H. was recovering fast from his wounds, though still lame, when last spoken with.
