Rodents Which Have Made Their Home Under Bridge, Driven From Refuge.
Some Portions Overrun.
Small Army Of Pests Seen To Make Their Way Up Genesee St. A Few Days Ago.
    Waukegan has been invaded!
Thousands of invaders have made their appearance and are overrunning the entire city. There is a possibility that battery C may be called from its practice march for the purpose of repelling the unwelcome visitors.
No, the Chili Con Carne army has not declared war and made Waukegan the initial point of atttack; neither has the Yellow Cloud from the orient become more impending. Nope-it isn’t quite as bad as that, but the plain truth of the matter is that thousands of rats, large and small, driven from their refuge under the old Genesee street bridge, have been put to rout and have sought quarters in other parts of the city.
According to several whose veracity there never has been any reason to doubt, a small army of rats, carrying in size from a few inches long to the size of a cat or small dog, scampered up from the ravine on Sunday and made their way up Genesee street some little distance before dividing into platoons and adopting guerrilla tactics.
Hundreds of these rats have taken up places of abode in frame homes where there is an easy means of egress. One man living on Utica street says the rats got into his garret and caused him to think that a man was on the roof. He went outside to investigate. It was some little time before he discovered the real cause.
The majority of the rats are said to have lived in the basement of the old building which rested on the west side of the bridge. This has now been torn out and the rats are without a home. In this extigency they have been compelled to seek new quarters and the result, local dealers claim, is that they have done a fine business in the sale of rat traps within the last few days. The invasion covers an exceedingly large territory and unless means are taken at once to exterminate the pests it is feared that the entire city will be overrun.
