Dogs or cats which are good “ratters” are an asset to a farm, according to a bulletin issued by the Will County Farm bureau.
It is estimated on good authority that a rat on the farm destroys $17 worth of grain, eggs, poultry and property of various kinds every year. The cost of keeping a dog on the farm is almost nothing, according to the bulletin, and every rat which is caught is just that much saved.
Most dogs can be trained to catch rats, and any large dog is usually a faithful guardian of property. One or two good dogs are worth several times over the cost of keeping them. Train them to catch rats and field rodents, and their value is further increased, according to the bulletin.
