Destructive Fire At Moline

Published in The Waukegan Gazette on January 2, 1858

The village of Moline, on the Rock Island, R. R., was visited by a very destructive fire last week, making the second which has occured there within a month. The last fire destroyed about 25,000 worth of property, consisting of stores, offices, etc. Mr. Jacob Shaw, one of the sufferers by the fire, had his life saved by the sagacity of his dog. Mr. S. slept in his store, and was aroused several times during the early part of the night, by the whining of his dog, and arose several times, and once went below to see if all as safe. He was suddenly awakened by being dragged out of bed. His dog dragged him by the arm. It was with difficulty that he reached the window, being nearly suffocated with smoke. He jumped from the window upon the roof of the adjoining building and escaped.
