Details of a ferocious attack of a pack of wolves upon Linley, the 12-year-old son of F. M. Bane, a tenant farmer living near the Kansas line, reached Mattoon the other day. Young Bane at dusk rode on horsrback to bring home the cows. As he passed a small grove fourteen grey wolves, five of very large size and nine half-grown ones, rushed out and surrounded the horse. They fought frantically to pull down the horse and capture the boy. Bane’s felt boots were torn to bits and his trousers were rent by the sharp claws of the beasts. The horse reared and charged through the wolves and reached the highway in safety.
