Dogs!

Ever since the days when old Homer wrote of the home-coming of Ulysses when his faithful old hound alone recognized him in his disguise as a beggar, there have been some of the finest bits of literature devoted to noble characteristics of dogs. Liewellyn’s faithful hound, Bill Sykes’ loyal mongrel; Bayard, Baldy of Nome, Jerry, and Michael, brother of Jerry; Pierrot, Dog of Belgium. Caesar the King’s dog are just a few of the moderns whose names come to memory out of some of the golden books. Fond as the world has always been of love and romance it has always been glad to turn to the book which had a real dog for its hero, partly because of the innate liking of humanity for honesty and nobility of character, and partly because of all the creatures man has domesticated the dog has the liveliest sense of humor and the highest ideal of companionship.
