Mystery of a Dog.

Animal spends several days in Well, People unable to Locate it.

The mystery of a dog’s bark and howl was solved this morning by Officer Adam Vogel and as a result the pet dog of the Osborne family is at home, probably eating to make up for what he lost during the past several days.

Persons passing the vacant place at Hickory and Grand had lately heard a dog moaning, howling and barking. Several stopped to look into the window and see if they could determine what was the matter.

None could get track of the animal. Finally the little daughter of Officer Vogel insisted that there was a dog there in distress and she prevailed upon her father to go and investigate. He looked under the porch, in the house and all over where he heard the sounds and, while he could hear the animal [or thought he could, he couldn’t locate the dog itself. He went away but the thought of the animal being imprisoned some place, brought him back.

On his hands and knees he worked his way under the porch and after much work he found an unused well. Then he heard the sounds more plainly. He procured a lantern and a rope and lowered it into the well. There he saw a dog with its head protruding above the water, sixteen feet below. Dropping a noose he finally managed, with the assistance of a friend, to get the rope about the animal’s neck and he drew it out.

For several minutes the animal could not see, it stood as if dazed and blinded-probably due to long confinement in the well. When it did recover, it made off up the street as fast as it could run.

It is believed it was down in the well for several days.
