Mrs. Clark Chandler, of Gurnee, had a miraculous escape from fatal injury last Friday afternoon at the circus grounds in Waukegan.
Mrs. Chandler, accompanied by her three children, had driven to the grounds in a surrey drawn by a team of grays, supposedly gentle. One of the animals reared and plunged at sight of some clothes drying on one of the work wagons, and a portion of the harness broke. Mrs. Chandler leaped to the ground and seized the animal’s head, but the horse, thoroughly, frightened, reared high in the air, hurling her to the earth and trampling her.
Horror dtriken, the spectators rushed to her aid and lifted the unconcious lady into the carriage, the horses having freed themselves from the vehicle and dashed off. Dr. Hines, physician for the Wallace shows, and Dr. Foley, were summoned and the sufferer was removed to the home of relatives, in the city.
It was at first thought that she was fatally injured, but she has rallied nicely and is resting easily. Mrs. Chandler bears no marks of the experience, but apprehension is felt that she may be hurt inturnally, as the heavy horse stepped upon her abdomen.
