Killed In Runaway.

Frank Gate, Young Driver of Team, Thrown in Under Heavy Wagon Wheels.

Horses Ran Madly Down The Road Despite Gates Effort To Stop Them.

Russell, Dec. 3.-[Special to the Sun]. Frank Gates. aged 27, met instant death this morning when a team he was driving ran away, throwing him under the wagon which ran over him, crushing his head so he was dead when friends reached him.

Gate had been driving a team belonging to Mr. Dickenson and was hauling gravel from the pit on the George DeForest farm when the team became frightened and ran away, Gate being dragged for some distance.

The DeForest pit is a mile and a half from Russell. Several persons witnessed the accident as there were a number of teams hauling gravel at the same time. Efforts of friends to stop the frightened horses proved unavailing, for by the time they had been checked Gate was dead.

A verdict of accidental death was returned by a coroner’s jury at Russell Monday morning. It was found that his team of horses ran away while he was loading gravel into a wagon and one of the heavy wagon wheels ran over his head, crushing it to a pulp. His body was discovered only when a passerby noticed the team of horses standing at the side of the road some little distance away.
