That is a strange story of self sacrifice that recently came across the sea from Russia. It tells of the sacrifice of three sons who, to save the life of their father, cast themselves to a pack of wolves who were in close pursuit. Here are the details of a very rare act of love and devotion:
A Russian and three sons started lately to make a sledge journey from Archangel to a village about 150 miles along the coast of the White sea. They took a considerable supply of ammnition, but a rainstorm so dampened it that it was useless.
About half way on their journey hundreds of wolves appeared. The travelers, seeing that if they remained together they would all fall victims to the ravenous beasts, decided to cast lots as to which should first leave the sledge and face them.
The heroic sons refused to permit their father to draw a lot. The first lot fell to the youngest, and he jumped out, knife in hand, but the delay was only short. Again a lot was cast, and the second son jumped out. About forty wolves continued the chase, and imploring his father to drive quickly, the remaining devoted son jumped out. The three delays saved the father.
