The Anthropological Society of France had recently under discussion the question whether the dog descends from the wolf. Mr. Harbourdin said that he brought up a wolf that was now six years old and as gentle as a lamb. It was, besides remarkably intelligent, and could open the doors by turning the handle. When it hears a clock strike it would stand on its hind legs to look behind, and would move the hands round with its paws. It is fond of perlumes, and lives on good terms with poultry and other animals, but has a great aversion for cats. Its bark resembles that of a dog. M. du Mortillat, on thr other hand, said that he had been endeavoring in vain to tame wolves. They were gentle enough so long as they were young, but became savage at the adult age.
