After a fight with a wolf driven by the pangs of hunger within the city limits of Galesburg, Fred Meadows, aged 14 years, succeeded in killing the animal with a 22-caliber rifle and his dog. The boy was hunting sparrows. The wolf came out of a cornfield and made for the lad with wide open jaws, but was met with a bullet from the rifle. As the wolf was making a second advance upon the boy the dog took a hand and soon had the wolf down. Meadows then shot him in the head.
