Pigs

Published in The Lake County Independent on March 1, 1895.

An unheard-of procedure on the part of feeders of swine is being practiced by some farmers around Bowen. They are buying plug horses and feeding them to hogs. John Mark has fed to his hogs about sixty-horses, and Jess Find, another hog raiser, has utilized the same number. They pay for them from 50 cents to $3.50 each, knock them in the head, skin them, then throw the carcasses in the hog pen. It is said that Mr. Mark has fed his hogs on horse flesh so long that now if one rides or leads a horse into the pen the hogs will rush at him and it is with great difficulty that they are prevented from devouring him.
